Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be in good shape before I start?

No. Many of our students are not in top condition when they first start learning karate. However, like most other sports and depending on how frequently they work out, their level of condition, stamina and flexibility increases dramatically over time.

I am over 40 years old.  Am I too old to start martial arts?

Karate can be done at any age. We have students from ages 5 to 75+.

I have a busy work schedule.  How much time do I need to devote to karate classes?

Due to current Covid restrictions, all our practice sessions are currently held online on ZOOM. We recommend that students attend the ZOOM sessions on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Your progress will be determined by your ability and how often you practise karate during the ZOOM sessions and by yourself. It's important to practice what you learn. This will help significantly to acclerate your progress at karate.

How long does it take to get a black belt?

Generally, it takes 5 years or more for a student to be achieve a black belt. During this period, a student progresses through a series of higher ranks (gradings), the rank denoted by the colour of the belt awarded (white - beginner, yellow, orange, green, blue and brown). Sensie Brodie continually watches the progress of each student. When he feels that the student has attained the specific skill sets necessary for a promotion, only then is the student awarded a higher rank following a formal grading (test) before the entire class.

On what days are the karate classes held?

Temporarily, all karate practice sessions are held online on ZOOM on Mondays, Tuesday and Thursdays from 6p.m. to 6.45p.m. EST. Kids and adults are welcome to join.
